A solenoid is a type of electromagnet, the purpose of which is to generate a controlled magnetic field through a coil wound into a tightly packed helix. The coil can be arranged to produce a uniform magnetic field in a volume of space when an electric current is passed through it.
Aug 10, 2009 · When the engine isn't running you can move the shift lever but once the engine is running the brake pedal must be depressed to release the shift interlock solenoid. Your suspicions are correct; pull the shift cover out and look for the white plastic locking tab and push/pull it to release the shift lever otherwise replace the solenoid in the area.
